High School, Threesomes, and Beer... trouble anyone?

Hey guys! I'm back again with my second music review, and the song titles couldn't possibly be more connected in a funny way. Anyways, let's get on with it!

The first song is "High School Never Ends" by Bowling for Soup. Now, I know everyone has heard this song, and I have to say, the song couldn't be more right. Now, don't get me wrong, I love college, but it's just like high school. I of course didn't realize this until the beginning of this year, and kind of wish that it wasn't that way. High school's all about drama, drama, drama, and mostly failed relationships that create MORE drama. While in high school, we seem to be walking in a blissful dream about how wonderful our lives are going. Well, I don't know about you guys, but when I look back at high school, I see a lot of crappy, terrible memories mixed in with the scarce few happy ones. The only times I actually seemed to be happy in high school were spent in the library in the morning, and on the tennis courts in the spring afternoon. Other than that, not much amazing happened. Anyways, during high school, we spent most of our time wondering who would be prom queen, who would win the district football championship game, and how we looked at prom and homecoming. Outside of high school, we worry about who will be employee of the month (or prom/homecoming queen if you have a football team at your college), who will win the Superbowl, and of course, how we look during interviews and parties. Here's the song, so you can listen and decide for yourselves:

Next up is "No I in Threesome" by Interpol. Honestly, before I listened to the song, I had no idea what to expect, as I had never even heard of the song before. When I started listening to it, my mind went straight to the obvious, hearing it as a song about nothing but sex. Again, like most other songs I listen to, once I listened to it again, my mind began to pick apart the lyrics, deciphering the hidden meanings behind the words. After a third listening, my mind came to the decision that it wasn't, in fact, about sex, but that it was about the opposite: two lovers fighting. The song states throughout the lyrics that it might be time to give something new a try. The line "But there are days in this life/When you see the teeth marks of time, two lovers divide" is an especially strong hint at this being a song about fighting and possibly breaking up. It seems as though it's another way of saying the sands of time are wearing something away, and in this case, it's love. Though this is more violent, making it sound like Time took a bite out of the relationship. Also, where it says "alone we may fight, so just let us be free tonight" in the song, it sounds like they're breaking up again. While the sound of the song seems to be light-hearted and happy, digging deeper into the lyrics pulls out a hidden meaning of sadness and an end. The one line that really confuses me, though, is "life is wine." That could mean anything. It could mean that life is red (which would refer to blood and therefore hint at violence), it could mean that life is bitter (as red wine tends to be a little bitter, or so I've heard and tasted), or it could mean that life is going smooth, since red wine seems like a very smooth alcohol to drink, as it can be very "moist" (as compared to "dry" white wine) and crisp and clean. It could also mean that life is adaptable and changes, as I've heard that red wine tastes good with a fairly large amount of food types, and the flavor can be fruity or not, and it comes in a variety of bottle sizes. Anyways, back on track from that tangent. It's a very confusing line, and your input may make it less confusing. Here's the song for your listening pleasure:

The last song for this blog is simply titled "Beer" by Reel Big Fish. This was another song that I hadn't heard of, and therefore had no idea what to expect, other than a bunch of alcohol-based lyrics. It turned out to be a song about rejection, with intermittent lyrics here and there calling a person a true friend if they're drinking with the "narrator" while the "narrator" asks for a beer. If I want to be blunt, it sounds like two people hooked up in a drunken stupor, and the girl said that she'd do again, but she ended up rejecting him at a later (and probably more sober) time, leaving him to wallow in his drunken misery. It's a very flat song, whose lyrics really don't seem that deep, and no matter how many times I read it, they don't seem to say anything about anything other than drunken sex (which tends to happen at college, of course). Here's the song for your listening pleasure:

Alcohol, Remedies, and Everybody Else

Okay guys. I'm writing about three songs this time [insert excitement for the first music lines review post]. Two of the songs were chosen through friends that I asked for a random song, and the other is random through my iTunes.

The first one is called "Alcohol" by Barenaked Ladies:

Okay, this is one of the two that a friend recommended. The first thing that went through my mind when I heard the opening lines "Alcohol, my permanent accessory/Alcohol, a party-time necessity" was "What the hell?" All I could think about was college students getting drunk. As the song progressed, that's the direction my mind went in. Each line sent me deeper and deeper into the thought processes of people getting drunk here at college. The entire song was talking about using alcohol for random purposes. Then, when I went back and re-read the lyrics, I thought for a moment, taking myself out of the drunken-stupor thoughts that I considered. I realized that, while it may not be true, it was entirely possible that the song was talking about loving a person more and more. Then, the last few lines, "Would you please ignore that you/Found me on the floor/Trying on your camisole?/O, alcohol, would you please forgive me?...Would you please forgive me?/Would you please forgive me?" really struck the spike home. My mind began to race with the possiblities about all the hidden meanings in this song, and other lines, "I love you more than the week before/I discovered alcohol" made me believe that I was right. Other lines, like "Forget the caffe latte, screw the raspberry iced tea/A malibu and coke for you, a g&t for me/Alcohol, your songs resolve like/My life never will/When someone else is picking up the bill" kind of shot down my theories. Of course, I'm sure that there are ways to link those lines back to a person, but i'm not sure how to do that.

The next song that I've got is "The Remedy" by Jason Mraz, another song recommended by a friend:

So many thoughts went through my head as I listened to the song and read the lyrics. Some of the thoughts included patriotism for 9/11, a literal remedy, and just general laid back attitudes questioning today's popular thoughts. The lyrics ring very close to patriotism, as it talks about how he can't block out the fireworks and how something on the surface stings someone or something born on the Fourth of July (Independence Day), which is what made me think of 9/11. Also, it mentions curing a dirty old disease, which could possibly be terrorism, which would then link to today's war on terror agains saddam hussein who people believe should have been killed the first time we fought him. It's just one of those songs that have so many images in them that it could fit so many topics. Of course, it could also pertain to an everyday remedy, as it again talks about curing an old disease. Again, it's hard to tell because of the many images. "Curing the old disease", "Stabbing the brother in the be right back after this", and "...turn off the sun but I'm still going to shine" just to name a few.

The last one for the night/morning is "Everybody's Broken" by Bon Jovi. Obviously this is the one that got chosen through my iTunes:

As I read the lyrics and listened, I decided that it was a very uplifting song. It's a very welcoming song to people that feel like they don't belong anywhere; that the people around them are just so perfect while they're worthless and full of imperfections. The line "It's okay, to be a little broken" is one of the strongest lines in the song. It dissuades the fear that almost all teenagers have about not fitting in. That fear is perhaps a teenagers deepest, darkest fear that will stop them from realizing that they're perfect the way they are. It's a song that carries an extremely positive message, and I couldn't find a way to turn it into a negative song at all. It's even possible that it's about Heaven, a place where everyone is equal, no matter who they were during their lifetime.

Okay people! That's the first review/response thing I've got, so let me know what you think! Tell me what you want to see me do for the songs, how I did, what you want changed, etc. Also, give me songs you want me to respond to. I promise I won't bite your head off no matter what you request (though I may become reluctant if every song requested is rap...). Catch you later!

Introduction Post

Hey guys and gals. This is my blog (obviously). There's not much to say about it, I guess, other than to describe what it is. Well, basically I'm going to post up lines of music that I hear (from my itunes/ipod, the radio, etc) and post how I feel about them. I know, it doesn't sound like anything special, but it should get better as I have more time to flesh the idea out and work some stuff up. If you like (and yes, I expect this will happen whether I ask you guys to or not), feel free to post up what you think about what I'm saying about songs and/or post up songs that you would like me to respond to. I won't promise that there won't be occasional rants between the music, of course, as something's bound to happen that's music related, or just related to life in general that I'll want to rant about.

I also like to give credit where credit is due, as you'll most likely find anytime sooner or later. The first thing I want to give credit to is actually a person. I'm creating this blog because one of my friends put up a blog that didn't seem like mindless ranting and a daily journal of their day to day lives (i.e. she wasn't all "OMG, no one understands me! I'm all alone in this cruel world because I saw a dying rose run over by a car" etc). Anyways, her blog, www.straightupjank.blogspot.com is pretty funny to read, so I'd like to give her credit for giving me the idea for a blog.

Anyways, I'm warning you now that the music I talk about will not be made up mostly of today's pop. Don't get me wrong, there will be some, but it's not going to be a predominant factor in this blog. There will be country, rock, alternative, heavy metal, metal, power metal, foreign music, holiday music, some r&b, and almost no rap (I don't like rap, which explains why there won't be much rap on here). Maybe some musical music, some choral/classical music, and some inspirational. It all just depends on what I've heard when I update. That's another thing. I'm not going ot guaruntee an update everyday, as I'm a college student and don't have all the time in the world to update everyday. If I don't update for a day or two, I'll try to make the next blog-post bigger than normal.

Alright, so, I'm going to start off by asking you what songs you want me to listen to and comment on, as right now, I'm drawing a blank on music I want to comment on. If I think of anything, I'll throw it up real quick!
